“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” Review

Listen… I love magic and fantasy, lush landscapes, and morally gray, charming characters as much as the next person. MORE than the next person. But I found a sense of authenticity lacking in this one. It seemed too obvious that everyone was playing dress up. I feel like they leaned a bit too heavily into the campy side of D&D, which didn’t tonally work when the film also asks you to be emotionally invested in Ed’s grief over his dead wife and his strained relationship with his daughter (re: his abandonment facilitated by his desire to, paradoxically, give her a better life). It bothered me that the leads didn’t have any chemistry together. I did like some of the landscapes, and the shots were technically impressive when they reminded me of the Kingsmen movies at times. I’m disappointed in how generic this felt, but I would prefer to see this foray into the fantasy genre on the big screen rather than a *totally* soulless action movie, so there’s that. In summary, this needed a healthy dose of more heart and stylistic details. Jarnathan deserved better by the way. Side note: how did the whole troupe not give a fuck about or realize Sofina’s overarching plan until there was less than 20 minutes of runtime left????
